The 500 miles 4 smiles project started life as a personal challenge for Christina Chatfield and developed into a National Campaign, led by Christina to raise awareness for Mouth Cancer and Dental Access. Christina started her journey from Kirriemuir Dental Practice in Scotland on the 19th May 2014. She arrived at Hove Lagoon on the 19th June to be welcomed by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove and a sea of smiling faces, cheers and an explosive bottle of Champagne.
After 4 weeks of walking the length of the country and clocking up well over 500 miles, perhaps by design, perhaps by getting lost a few times; either way it was an amazing achievement. All through the walk she was focused on making the general public aware of mouth cancer and how important it is to visit your hygienist or dentist.
The walkers that day enjoyed a leisurely stroll of just 13 miles through Worthing and along Brighton sea front. A fittingly sunny and glorious summer day was the perfect finale to a massive achievement. Christina and the 500 miles team continue to campaign so why not check out the following links
Another campaign close to Christina’s heart is getting the male population vaccinated against HPV; at the moment only girls are vaccinated nationally.
